About the Blackboard Awards:

Founded in 2002 by New York Family, the Blackboard Awards accomplish two worthy goals: helping New York City parents make informed choices about their children’s education, and honoring and celebrating schools, principals and teachers of excellence.

New York Family is a lifestyle magazine focused on the interests, needs, and concerns of New York City parents. The print publication is distributed at more than 1,000 locations-including schools, pediatricians offices, retail locations, children’s stores and apartment buildings. In print, the magazine reaches more than 100,000 parents throughout the city. At the beginning of every month, a digital edition of the new issue is archived on newyorkfamily.com, and sent to the thousands of families on our e-newsletter list. If you want to receive our newsletters, visit our sign-up page.

Who is eligible to receive a Blackboard Award?

Any school in New York City from all education communities (public, private, parochial, charter) and all grade levels (nursery, elementary, middle, high school).

How can parents and schools participate?

Parent participation is critical to the helpfulness and success of the Blackboard Awards. Since its inception, thousands of city parents have nominated their schools, principals, and teachers.

We welcome nominations all year, but there are deadlines for the nominations to allow us to pick honorees for the ceremonies. Please note that, in addition to parents, educators and students are welcome to submit nominations.

How does it work?

In February, we host an awards night for schools, principals, and guidance counselors. For most of the Blackboard Awards’ history, the master of ceremonies was the legendary memoirist and NYC teacher Frank McCourt. Since his death we’ve welcomed a variety of distinguished educators and city dignitaries. The participation of NBC News’ Kate Snow and Lynda Baquero as the hosts of the Blackboard Awards was a special honor given NBC’s own commitment to education through their annual Education Nation series. Bolstering the ceremonies is an in-depth series of education-related articles, profiles and resources appearing in New York Family magazine and here on BlackboardAwards.com.
